Web Design for the Real World
So you think you need a website? Or you’re really tired of the website that your cousin’s best friend designed for you (and then skipped town)? I’m here to help.
The first thing that I do is meet with you, either in person or on the phone. I want to really get a feel for your company, your goals and needs, what you have right now, and what your web design budget is. Then I help you develop a plan to get started.
The next thing to do is to purchase a domain name, which is the “.com” for your website (or .biz, or .us or many other choices). We have to buy that name and register it for you. Then in order for your website to show up on the internet it needs to be hosted somewhere. We will need to purchase hosting services if you don’t already have them. My services include helping you get through this process and uploading your site to your hosting account.
Now comes the good part — designing your site. The possibilities are pretty much unlimited these days. We can match your company’s chosen colors, add your logo, add photo galleries, blogs, calendars, and set up an online store. We are only limited by your imagination and your budget. During our consultation I will gather enough information to decide what type of web design you are going to need, whether it is a simple one- or two-page site, on up to a site with thousands of pages.
If your site is going to encompass more than a few pages I will suggest using something called a content management system. I am a Joomla and WordPress specialist, so I generally recommend one of those two systems if we are going to go in this direction. All content management systems give you the ability to log in to a control panel and change your site if you feel up to it. If not, I will continue to maintain your site for you.
All of my initial site designs include maintenance, backups, monitoring and small updates for the first year. Maintenance agreements are available after the first year, with pricing determined by the complexity of your website. It is very important to keep your site updated to avoid being hacked and to improve your search engine results.
Every one of my site designs includes search engine optimization to help your site show up better in search engine results. I can’t guarantee that you will be the next Amazon, but working together we can get your site to a good position in its niche.
Here is a general idea of what to expect for very basic web design projects. Each job begins with an established budget and a written proposal. Don’t be afraid to contact me if your budget is smaller than the starting prices listed below. We’ll figure something out.
